Report: Pistons Trade For Former U-M Star Hardaway, Jr.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is reporting that the Detroit Pistons have sent guard Quentin Grimes to the Dallas Mavericks for former University of Michigan star guard Tim Hardaway, Jr. and three future 2nd round picks on Friday morning.
Grimes came to the Pistons before the NBA's trade deadline this past season with the New York Knicks. But played in only six games for the Pistons in the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury. Grimes is entering the final year of his rookie contract after playing his college ball at Kansas and Houston.
Hardaway, Jr. (pictured above) averaged over 14 points a game for the Western Conference champion Mavericks this past season, but lost playing time late in the regular season and in the playoffs. He is owed more than $16 million next season, the final year of his current contract. The 2024-25 season will be his 12th year in the NBA.
Tim is the son of former NBA great Tim Hardaway, Sr. and was a star at the University of Michigan in the early 2010's. He was a key member of the Wolverines' run to the national championship game in 2013, where they lost to Louisville in the title game (Louisville's title has since been vacated due to NCAA violations during that season).
ClickOnDetroit.com reports that the draft picks involved are in 2025 and two in the 2028 Draft.
This leaves the Pistons with a little less than $50 million in salary cap space for free agency, which is set to begin this coming weekend.
