In a week where one of America sports biggest events is happening...The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament...what is the biggest sports story that's going on right now?

It's the National Football League and it's free agency signing period.  Which begins on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm eastern time.

Here we are, at the Ides of March (if you don't know what the Ides of March are, go watch a movie/documentary on Julius Caesar) and it is incredible that a lot of the talk around the sports world does NOT involve the NCAA Tournament.  It's all NFL free agency.  It just shows that the NFL is king and it isn't changing anytime soon.

Former NFL Most Valuable Players Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson are taking up all or most of the TV and Internet talk in a week where it's usually people breaking down the brackets and trying the pick the right upset in their bracket pool (legal or otherwise).

We've been over this before, but here's why the NFL is dominating talk right now:

NO DOMINANT TEAMS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

There's lots of good teams in the tourney this year.  But not a dominant Duke, North Carolina, or if you want to go old school UNLV or UCLA for people to hate on.  If you have schools in there that people hate, you generate more interest.  The TV ratings are good for the most part, but not like the NFL.

THE NFL MARKETING PEOPLE ARE GENIUS

The marketing folks at the NFL have already extended the Super Bowl into Mid-February (just so they can keep people talking and thinking NFL later in the year).  And now with NFL free agency signings being official on Wednesday, they have extended the chatter into the spring.  And I'm not even counting the talk heading into the NFL Draft, which is at the end of April.  The NFL sure knows how to keep interest in the league up during the offseason.

BASEBALL ISN'T AS POPULAR AS IT ONCE WAS

Major League Baseball still doesn't know how to promote itself.  The sport isn't as popular as it once was, no matter how many myopic baseball lovers will tell you otherwise.  The lack of TV ratings in the MLB playoffs prove it.  Interest is down in the sport for a variety of reasons (ungrateful, overpaid, and arrogant players, lack of competitive balance, length of games, and of course, the stupid owners who helped create this mess, etc.).  Baseball isn't the National Pastime now.  Football is.  People need to accept it and deal with it.

NBA AND NHL PLAYOFFS HAVEN'T STARTED YET

The NBA Playoffs and the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs don't start for another month.  And we're after the trade deadline in both leagues.  So there's no need to inundate people with NBA and NHL talk yet (although ESPN will do that with the NBA ad nauseum).

The NFL is King in America, Long Live the King!!!
