WNBA Star Sparks Outrage with Detroit Diss, Michigan Claps Back
'Detroit vs. Everybody' is something we've been saying for years. And the reaction to this WNBA player's Detroit diss has proven that everyone in Michigan echoes the sentiment.
Sophie Cunningham is learning that if you come for Detroit, you come for all of Michigan.
WNBA Adding Five More Teams By 2030
On June 30, the WNBA announced that it would be expanding the league to include 18 teams by 2030. (Right now, the league has 13 teams, with the Golden State Valkyries currently playing in their first season.) One of the cities that the WNBA plans to expand to is Detroit.

Detroit is no stranger to professional women's basketball. In the early 2000s, Detroit was home to the Detroit Shock, who won three WNBA titles while in the city. Eventually, the team was moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham Says 'I Don't Know How Excited People Are to Be Going to Detroit'
While the city of Detroit and Michigan as a whole were excited to hear the news, there's at least one very vocal opponent to two of the cities included in the expansion.
In an interview, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham praised the league for expanding. However, she expressed surprise that the league wasn't adding teams in cities like Kansas City, Nashville, or Miami. Why? Well, it seems she isn't a big fan of Detroit (or Cincinnati, though that isn't even a city included in the expansion.)
In a video clip posted by Yahoo! Sports, Cunningham said,
It's a hard situation, but, man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or Cincinnati.
(For the record, the league will be expanding to Cleveland, not Cincinnati.)
Detroit Claps Back at Sophie Cunningham
This did not sit well with the people of Detroit. In fact, it caught the attention of the official X account of the city of Detroit, and they felt compelled to respond.
More than 775,000 people were excited to come to Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft. Detroit is a sports town. We're sure we'll see the same excitement for the WNBA returning.
Point blank. Period.
The city wasn't the only one. Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper (who absolutely reported as eligible) took to X to clap back at Cunningham, as well. Skipper had some shade of his own to throw, saying,
You ever been there? Pretty good place to play, well not for you.
City of Cleveland Claps Back at Sophie Cunningham
The City of Cleveland didn't take kindly to Cunningham's comments, either. (Aside from the fact that she misnamed them as Cincinnati.)

The city posted a video of Cunningham's teammate, Caitlin Clark, from when she was in the city playing in the NCAA Final Four in 2024. She praised the city in the clip, and the city added, "Your teammate doesn't seem to think Cleveland is too bad!"
Sophie, a lot of people want to go to Detroit (and Cleveland), but I'm pretty sure you won't be getting a warm welcome there.
