It's been a difficult couple of years for the Michigan State University football program. After the one-two punch of the COVID-19 pandemic and the removal of Mel Tucker as coach following a scandal, the program has been in a free-fall since its Peach Bowl victory in 2021.

Things were supposed to turn around with the hiring of Jonathon Smith from Oregon State, but that has led to a 5-7 season in 2024, and they are currently 3-5, riding a 5-game losing streak after losing to rival Michigan on Saturday. It's just been a series of unfortunate events for a school that hit #5 in the AP Polls in 2021.
