Each year, hundreds of kids try out for their college football teams, and even fewer make the roster. It's even less common for those athletes to get attention from pro teams, let alone be one of the 257 players chosen each NFL draft.

But Marshawn Kneeland, a Grand Rapids native who attended Godwin Heights High School before enrolling and playing at Western Michigan University on the defensive line, managed to cut through the news and get selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft. He even scored his first career touchdown this week against the Cardinals.

Sadly, Kneeland's promising career has come to an end after the Cowboys posted a statement this morning announcing his sudden passing at the age of 24:

"It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend, Catalina, and his family."

Police records indicate that Kneeland was involved in a police chase before abandoning his vehicle, and was later found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Beyond a career, it's incredibly heartbreaking to see a young man who had his whole life ahead of him quietly suffering behind the scenes.

On and off the field, his coaches had nothing but good things to say about him and his work ethic. Godwin Heights superintendent Chad Conklin put it well: "He embodied qualities of determination, character, and kindness that we will always honor."

He will be remembered for his drive, commitment to the game, and the way he carried himself for those around him.
